Nominations will close on Friday the 31st of January at 5pm AEDT. Who is Marlis Cohen OAM? Marlis arrived in Australia from Germany in January 1939 as a young girl. While her parents had been completely assimilated in Germany, on arrival in Australia they both became actively involved in the Australian and Victorian Jewish community and from them Marlis learnt about community service and they provided amazing role models for her future community involvement. She believed strongly in giving to the community of which she was part and was a proud Progressive Jew and a Zionist. She was grateful for the country that had given her a home and so many opportunities and she gave freely of her time to many communal organisations including WIZO, UIA and the Leo Baeck Centre. Everyone who worked with her spoke of her dedication, her quiet determination and her high standards. She was particularly concerned with the future of the Australian Jewish community and enjoyed meeting its leaders of the future and the naming of these awards in her honour would have given her much pride and pleasure.
